Introduction

Simon and Andrew stood at the edge of the Sea of Galilee, exhausted and defeated. All night, they had cast their nets into the waters, hoping for a catch. Each time, they pulled them back empty. Their hands were numb, their backs ached and their spirits downcast.

They were not merely fishing. Beneath the surface of their labor was a deep hunger to prove their worth. But as dawn broke, their nets were as empty as their spirits.

We’ve all been in that same place.

We pour ourselves into our work, relationships and dreams hoping to find something that validates our efforts. We struggle and strive yet, the question remains: Is this all there is to life?

Like Simon and Andrew, we all face moments where the life we imagined seems unreachable. Times when we feel tired and lost.

The Bible tells us that we were created for great things. Ephesians 2:10 declares, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

The Call to Greatness

However, discovering purpose is often elusive, especially when we measure our worth by our achievements Simon and Andrew must have felt it–the quiet frustration, the creeping doubt.

Their identity as fishermen depended on their ability to haul up fish, but on that night, as they stood there with empty nets, even that identity felt fragile.

Then, a voice from the shore:

“Friends, have you caught anything?”

They looked up, squinting into the dawn. A man stood, watching them. His presence, calm yet commanding.

“No,” they answered. The word carrying the weight of a long, fruitless

night.

“Cast your net on the side of the boat,” He said.

They had done that all night. What difference would one more throw make?

Hesitant, they threw the net yet again. It sank beneath the surface.

This time, it didn’t return empty. It came back full–overflowing with fish, more than they had ever caught. For Simon and Andrew, it had never really been about the fish.

Their calling was not tied to their success but their willingness to obey.

“Follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” Perhaps that is the call you are waiting for.

God beckons on each of us to step into the greatness He has already purposed for our lives. It is not a call based on our abilities or
achievements but is deeply rooted in His plan for us–a plan made long before we took our first breath.

You were created for a grand purpose. God’s call on you is an invitation to step into the extraordinary and walk in His greatness.

Isaiah 64:8 reminds us, “But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.”

Like clay, we are meant to be shaped by God–not by our failures or even our wins but by His hands.

The Eagle and the Chicken Coop: Embrace Your True Potential

Once, in a quiet corner of a farmyard, a young eagle was raised with chickens. From the moment it hatched, it lived as the chickens
did–pecking at grains, scratching in the dirt and clucking alongside
its companions.

One day, a majestic old chicken soared overhead and caught sight

of the young eagle below. Perched on a nearby tree, it called out,

“What are you doing here, among chickens?”

The young eagle paused, puzzled. “This is my home,” it replied. I’ve always lived here. It is comfortable.”

The Call to Greatness

The older eagle laughed gently. “Comfortable? You were made for the skies! You’re meant to soar on the winds, to climb higher than your eyes can imagine. Why do you limit yourself so?”

The young eagle was intrigued. It had always seen other birds flying in the air but felt that was beyond it. Could it leave behind everything it knew?

With guidance from the old eagle, it began to practice flying. At first, it was terrifying and clumsy–every attempt felt exhausting.

Quitting and returning to the coop became even more appealing under this new weight. However, with time and perseverance, the young eagle’s wings grew stronger.

One day, as it soared above the clouds, the chicken coop was nothing more than a faint memory.

Breaking Free from the Comfort Zone

Like the young eagle, many of us live confined by the boundaries of our comfort zones, mistaking safety for purpose. We settle for routines, habits and relationships that keep us grounded even when  we feel a deeper call to something greater.

The eagle’s journey, inspired by a classic fable, reminds us that stepping out of our comfort often feels difficult and uncertain but sometimes, it is only by embracing the unknown that we discover the full extent of our potential.

The story of Abraham in the Bible illustrates this same truth.

Genesis 12:1–3 records God’s call to him:

“Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land I will show you.’” At seventy–five, Abraham faced a monumental decision. Living in Haran, he enjoyed a life of wealth, comfort and security. As Genesis  13:2 notes, he was “very rich in livestock, in silver and in gold.” Despite the risks, Abraham obeyed God’s call to leave behind everything familiar. He exchanged the comforts of Haran for the uncertainty of a promise–and in doing so, became the father of  many nations.

The Cost of Greatness

Abraham’s journey reminds us that true greatness often requires a price. For God to fulfill His promises, Abraham had to separate himself from the idolatry and ties of his past. This wasn’t just
about leaving a location–it was about letting go of associations and mindsets that did not align with God’s purpose for him.

Many of us find ourselves in similar situations. We hold onto comforts that prevent us from stepping into our divine calling–whether it is the fear of failure, judgement from others or the security of routine. Until we let go, we cannot walk in the path God has set out for us.

Ecclesiastes 1:9 reminds us, “What has been is what will be and what has been done is what will be done and there is nothing new under the sun.” The Bible is filled with stories of individuals who achieved greatness by stepping out in faith. The setbacks we face on our journey are not unique to us. We can draw strength from the Scripture which guides us to overcome the challenges we face

daily. 1 Corinthians 10:11 teaches, “Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction.”

Stepping Into the Skies

The road to greatness is filled with hurdles to overcome. Like the eagle learning to fly, it requires perseverance, courage and trust.

Just as the eagle was made to soar, you are designed for a life far beyond mediocrity. What’s holding you back? Is it a fear of the unknown? A reluctance  to leave the comforts of familiar habits or relationships? Remember,  God’s call often leads us to uncharted territory but it is in these places that we discover our true purpose.

The question is simple: Will you remain in the coop, bound by fear, or will you spread your wings and embrace the freedom for which you were created?

The skies are waiting–will you answer the call?
